Got a minor, if there is such a thing, bathroom remodel done this long weekend, so a toast and a meal out was in order.
.
So what do we have here? Their Bootlegger Old Fashioned with #rittenhouserye. Shrimp ceviche. A shot of the dining room, even though we sat in the bar this time. Pizza with linguica and more. Their chimi steak; a bavette steak with crispy fries, chimichurri, blue cheese and other goodies.

Came home and admired the handiwork. I’ll sleep well tonight.

When I was five, my mother took me out for ice cream, but I wanted the cream of broccoli cheddar soup instead. Not much has changed; a big, savory bowl of soup remains one of my favorite and most frequent meals. Of course, Japanese ramen is right up there as one of the best. A trip to Afuri Ramen and Dumpling in Beaverton was the perfect winter meal.

Afuri Ramen + Dumpling just unveiled their new menu, allowing them to focus on these two type of bowls of goodness, rather than a more izakaya menu. They still carry terrific small plates and donburi and a great bar menu.

Everything was great and this is both a great family and date night spot!

I’ve had this LOVELY bottle of Kestrel Vinters’ 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon in my “cellar” since my first visit to their beautiful Yakima Valley winery in 2014. It’s from their Winemakers Select Series. It was time to open this one for our Christmas dinner.

And oh, it so did not disappoint! The aromas had us as soon as the bottle was corked, the color, the flavors … just delicious … dense, layered, satiny smooth, wonderfully complex.
.
Don see, btw, was a New York roast beef, corn pudding, roasted squash and carrots, sautéed asparagus and blistered shishito peppers.

So … Vegas! Such a mixed bag for me. Noice, flashy bright lights, late hours, crass commercialism, and an opulent, over the top aesthetic; just not my thing. And yet; I always enjoy myself here! I LOVE the people watching, the seeing what’s new, what’s changed, those small moments snd visuals that are just not part of home … or anywhere else.

So here’s me at a slot machine. My standing joke is that when servers come around and get me a well drink, the casino has already lost money on me. That’s how little I spend gambling. Okay, slight exaggeration but it’s true that nooooo casino will be sending me offers for comp stays. Viva Las Vegas!

Vegas at night, from our room at the Bellagio. A blast of warmth and sunshine, miles and miles of concrete stepping, great eats and drinks, people watching, some window shopping, and pool time. No shoes or out of the city park hikes, but a wonderful and easy little getaway. And I do enjoy that Bellagio fountain.
